Cash for Gold - Episode 9

Why are there no pawn shops here? How is a person to raise a little extra cash without selling the family silver? Assuming one has family, and silver. These are some of the burning questions our intrepid entrepreneur has to tackle in the all new installment of 50 Dollars and a Prayer.

If you are new to the Blog, welcome! Or if you have missed any previous episodes you can CATCH UP HERE! So without further ado, let’s find out if the family silver is in jeopardy.

July 2014
Why do such highs have to be accompanied by such lows? For the first time since I was laid off, here was a real chance for me to make some money and what happens? I don’t have the money to buy the ingredients to make the cookies to make the money. SIGH!

AND I only had till the following day to make the cookies because in my wisdom I opened up my big fat mouth and said “Yes sure I can do that for you by tomorrow.” Why, why, why, do I do these things? Why couldn’t I have said two days instead of the following day? What was I thinking? Oh yes; that’s right, I wasn’t thinking?

OK OK beating yourself up is not going to help this situation. You need a solution. What are your options? First of all let’s work out how much money you need. I sat down with a piece of paper and pen and made a list of the ingredients I needed and the packaging I needed. As I was already familiar with all of the prices I was able to quickly work out how much money I needed.

To my surprise it was not as much as I thought. But as I had no money what so ever it could as well have been a million dollars. If I was in England I would have taken up all the valuable electrical goods in my house and taken them to the pawn shop. But we don’t have those here so what’s a girl to do to raise money in a hurry?

No one owed me money so there was no calling in a debt. My gold jewellery was not nearly heavy enough to even consider the cash for gold stores. And no my family did not have any silver. I paced up and down my living room. Something had to be done and fast.

An hour later I was still pacing and I was no closer to a solution than I was before. It was just after 8pm and I decided to relax. I knew from experience that stressing never brings about solutions. I turned the TV on and started watching an old episode of Star Trek Deep Space Nine. Damn Avery Brooks was sexy as all hell though.

Half way through the episode Dr Bashir was reminding Major Kira about the 100 Bajoran litas she owed him from the “friendly” wager they’d had the week before and as usual Kira displayed her anger management issues by arguing that the bet was only for 50 Bajoran litas.

That was when it hit me; the check, the bank. How long has it been? I went running into my bedroom to find the receipt. It seemed to take an eternity to find it but eventually it turned up. I rushed to my calendar to check how many weeks had passed and to my joy it was five.

My aunt had sent me a check for my birthday but because it takes 20 working days for an overseas check to clear and I had totally forgotten about it. I took a quick glance at the clock and I still had time to get to the supermarket before it closed. So I jumped in the car and headed out.

Smiling all the way home I could now get up in the morning and bake the cookies ordered and I would be able to rush into town and get the packaging that I needed also.

It was a good day!

To Hell and Back In a Single Day – Episode 3

Hello Again!
In our last installment our intrepid entrepreneur had been sent packing from a posh hotel and was eagerly awaiting the decision from a café owner that could possibly affect her entire life. If you missed the first two episodes click CATCH UP before going on. OK so let’s discover the fate of our heroin.

June 2014
The husband began by saying how much he and his wife enjoyed my shortbread. He waxed lyrical about the flavor the texture and the size, he had nothing but good words to say about my cookies. I smiled and I began to relax. All that needless worry; I should have known that my cookies would speak for themselves. I should have known that anyone with a discerning pallet would simply love my cookies. After all they are awesome, I am awesome and I am going to make a whole truck load of money from making cookies. Life is wonderful, I love life, and I love everyone in it. We are all beautiful wonderful people and I want to run and hug and kiss everyone on the entire planet.

Suddenly I was snapped back to reality when I heard the words, “Sorry but at the end of the day we could make shortbread ourselves”.

Dazed and confused I sat for a moment shaking my head. I could not compute, my system was crashing and I tried to reboot but everything went black.

……Loading …….Loading ……..Loading.

Blinking rapidly my mind began to carve a path through the fog. I began to comprehend words again and I realised with great dismay that they….DID NOT WANT MY COOKIES. I tried hard to muster my best stiff upper lip but as I am someone who’s facial expressions tell all I am sure that he could see how shocked and disappointed I was. I made my excuses and left as quickly as I could without running through the place. I got to the car park and rummaged through my bag. I needed a fag like yesterday. But before I could light it I found myself in tears. I rushed to the car and jumped in.

WHAT ON EARTH SHALL I DO NOW?

I had lost my job, I had invested the last of my money in scheme that just blew up in my face and I did not even get to have the interview I was called for the day before. It was hopeless. I was hopeless. I had no back-up plan and no clue as to what I could do. There was no hope!

I wiped my face and started the car. It was a long, slow and painful drive home. I had been expecting to be planning making cookies for the café on my return journey. But instead I was completely dejected. A failure! AGAIN!

50 Dollars and Another Prayer - Episode 2

Welcome Back!

Those of you following my story you will remember that at the end of the first installment I had just taken my last $50 said a prayer and invested it in a shortbread cookie making scheme. If you are new to the blog or missed the first part of the story CLICK HERE to read Part 1. OK So let’s jump right in to find out what happened next.

Part 2
June 2014
It took all of my resolve not to call the café to find out if they liked the shortbread cookies or not. Literally everything I owned was riding on them saying yes, so to say I was on tender hooks was a real understatement. However I also had a job interview to concern myself with so preparing myself for that was a distraction for me.

The job was for a sous chef (assistant head chef) at a large hotel. I was excited about my prospects as I had been recommended by someone prominent within the organisation. I dressed in my best power suit and with portfolio in hand I headed out nice an early for my interview. I arrived 15 minutes early and decided to just sit in the car and relax for 10 minutes. I always like to arrive 5 minutes before my interview time.

The 10 minutes passed quickly and I was soon heading to reception to announce my arrival. The receptionist asked me to take a seat and informed me that someone would be with me shortly. 20 minutes later I was still waiting. I went back to the receptionist who quite clearly had forgotten I was there and was very quick to apologise and said she would go personally to the human resources office to find out what was keeping them.

Another 10 minutes passed and I looked up to see the receptionist approaching me with a very sheepish look on her face. I immediately knew something was wrong. This very polished young lady informed me that I had come the wrong day and that my interview was scheduled for the following week. Now my blood pressure began to rise, but I have always been able to conduct myself in an articulate professional manor when the need arises. I calmly went into my handbag and produced the letter I received from the human resources office stating the date and time of my interview.

The receptionist quickly went from a normal shade for a Caucasian to a very vivid shade of beetroot red and began apologising profusely once again and asked if she could take the letter to the office. I handed it to her and sat down to wait. This time only a few minutes passed before the receptionist was with me once again. This time she stated that there had been a mix up in the office and asked if I could return the following week for the interview.

I was not a happy camper! However there was not much I could do about it so I asked the receptionist to write the new date and time on the letter and sign it. This she did without hesitation and I left most disappointed.

I was grinding my teeth all the way home. I had such high hopes for that interview just to have them dashed away so unceremoniously. Did these people not understand that I was on the breadline? I had no money and no job. I was in a very very bad way.

The following day I awoke with a heavy heart. I intended to go to the café to find out if the couple liked my shortbread cookies. But after the events of the previous day I really could not muster up any enthusiasm. I am by nature a positive person but that morning my positivity had fled and left me feeling very sorry for myself. Even I cannot be a ray of sunshine every day.

Never the less I got up and got myself ready to head out to the café. I got in the car and headed out. I put on some funky music in an attempt to lift my spirit and I have to say by the time I got to the café I was feeling much more optimistic. I went inside and was given a warm greeting and offered a cup of coffee. I sat down and waited for the husband to come and have a chat with me about my cookies.

They were quite busy when I arrived so it was some time before he was able to come and join me. I did not mind however because the café is in such a quite pleasant location. It really is the kind of place where you can while away a good few hours without realizing the time has passed. As I was finishing my coffee he came and sat down with me.
